Where it is made: Catalunya, in the Priorat region near Barcelona.
Grape: Largely Garnacha and Carignan, but also Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.
Great Producers: .Clos Mogador, Clos de L'Obac, Finca Dofi, L'Ermita, Clos Martinet, Clos Erasmus, Terroir al Limit.
What to Expect: Deeply coloured and full bodied wines with fragrant fruit, balanced by acid and tannin. These wines, especially when Garnacha based, are big, bold and live long on the palette. Made with old vines on the unique slate and quartz llicorella soil of the region, there is a definite element of terroir. This wine is unique and delicious.
Smooth, velvety textures can be met with bombastic alcohol levels. Black and red fruits and wines varying from pale ruby to deep purple.
Eat it with: Beef, Venison and other furred game dishes. The meat could be rare but charred or slow-cooked. Cheese - blue and/or aged.
