The Wine

A classic name in a classic wine region. There has been an Avril in Chateauneuf du Pape since the late 18th Century. Known for absolute quality, a wonderful style and a commitment to the flavours of this traditional region, this is a wine that always impresses.

This is a wine without fault and full of beautiful, surprisingly delicate flavours, although of course it has immense power running through it. It is a young wine, very dark in colour, with a nose of raspberries, chocolate and violets.

The Region

Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the most famous regions in wine today. This is well deserved. It produces consistently wonderful wines of great purity and hedonistic joy.

With over 8,000 acres under vine it is the largest appellation in the Rhone valley and the only part of the Southern Rhone which can really match both Cote Rotie and Hermitage, which are in the Northern Rhone.

The wines are mainly (94%) red and are largely full-bodied with a rich texture and spicy character. They can also have a beautiful garrigue aroma (a French term relating to the smell of dry herbs as they are crunched under foot) and a real sense of place. There are 18 varieties of grape that are permitted in a CdP blend: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsaut are the most important. But this really is the land of great Grenache, which needs heat to ripen fully, as does Mourvedre. Syrah, on the other hand is truly more at home in the cooler Northern Rhone, and care must be taken to not let it over-ripen.

Food Pairing

Pair with red meat, game meat or any rich, brooding dishes.

CdP is a versatile wine and can really accommodate most foods!

Critic Review

Vinous gives this 95/100:

Brilliant ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe red berries, incense, garrigue and smoky minerals convey a sexy Asian spice nuance in the background. Supple, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering intense black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate. Smooth, seamless and concentrated but energetic as well, with velvety, slow-building tannins giving shape to a very long, spice- and mineral-accented finish.

Serving

As a young wine this will need some air to fully open up. Decanting for 2+ hours, and ideally 4-6 would be advisable. Keep in a relatively cool and dark place in the decanter.
