Joh Jos Prum
Joh Jos Prum is a producer with few equals in the Mosel; Germany; or the World. Stemming from a family that can trace its roots back around 800 years, there is a tremendous amount of history.
Run by wonderfully eccentric producer Manfred Prum, the estate grows its grapes in the most revered and hallowed soils (slate!) of the Mosel valley. With vineyards in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Manfred's releases are amongst the most anticipated in the world of wine.
His vines in Wehlener Sonnenuhr are south-facing and on an incredibly steep slop. This gives them ample sunlight and a well-draining soil to ripen well in this northern latitude.
Most of the wines are kept in stainless steel to keep them fresh and free of sulphur, although cask ageing is sometimes used to add some character. Often held back by a vintage, Manfred only releases his wines when he knows they are ready. However, they are prized for their longevity and ability to keep developing as they do so.
