Domaine de Chevalier Rouge 2009

One of the classed growths of Graves, in Pessac-Leognan, Domaine de Chevalier produces exquisite wines.

A huge amount of care and attention is paid to the grapes here, which are sorted by hand three times - at each stage any single grape that doesn't meet the high standard is discarded. The grapes are crushed very gently here, the idea being that this should be a wine with fine, silky tannin rather than coarse and more astringent ones.

2009 was an absolutely excellent vintage all over Bordeaux. Reading through the Jancis Robinson reviews in The Press section, you can see how the wine has evolved beautifully over time, becoming intense and delicious.

Various Jancis Robinson reviews, giving 17.5+/20, with the most recent review at the top and working back in time. The year in brackets is when the review was written. This gives a wonderful snapshot of the progression of this wine:

"Notably deep blackish ruby. Intense, classically sandalwood nose with a certain Cabernet Franc-like fragrance lifting the whole. Elegant for a 2009. Bone dry finish. Tannins swamped by fruit. Absolutely no hurry to drink this - it has the structure for a long life - but it's already a deep-throated pleasure. Very promising and classical with lovely freshness." (2017)

"Unusually for a classed growth bordeaux, the back label tells us this blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot. Bravo! Such a comfortable pair of old slippers on the nose!  By which I don't mean sweaty or malodorous but so relaxed. Sweet and rich but not heavy. Pure pleasure and already easy to enjoy - dangerously so." (2014)

"Crimson. Sappy, very Graves and tobacco leaf, and already complex. Racy and not heavy. Still quite dry on the finish but convincing. A dramatic move away from the heady sweetness of the right bank. Super clean and brisk. Lighter than most but very well balanced." (2013)

"Very dark. Neat, well balanced. Low key. Quite gentle tannins. Nicely balanced and very friendly with some pace. Very complete." (2013)

"Rich, dark, spicy aromas then spreads sweetly across the palate. Dense and long and already so smooth." (2011)

"Some nerve as well as some fat on the nose here. Firm and mineral on the finish. Real structure to this bone dry wine. Not unlike de Fieuzal but a bit richer. I feel confident that more interest will develop." (2010)
