Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia 2006

We currently have 2 in stock.

There are few more venerable wines in Piemonte or even the whole of Italy. This is a grand wine if ever there was one. Made in tiny quantities in just the best years, the Granbussia is a jem in any collection.

This is a wine to go with fine cuisine. Complex flavours will go well with the roses, violets, leather, liquorice and tobacco flavours in the wine. This wine could pair with the richest of veal or boar dishes.

Aldo Conterno was one of the first producers in Piemonte to make wine from only his own vineyards rather than buying in fruit.

This wine, the Granbussia, is produced only in select vintages and is a blend of some of the oldest vines from 3 specific sites on the hill of Bussia: Romirasco (70%), Cicala (15%) and Colonello (15%). The wines from each site are vinified separately before blending.

The juice is fermented on the skins for 65 days before fermentation is complete. From here the wines are aged for 3 years in 2500 Litre Slavonian oak casks before being blended. The next step is rather unusual - the wine is then kept in stainless steel tanks for the next 2 years. This retains fresh aromatics in the wine. The wine then remained in bottle until around 8 years after the harvest.

Vinous gives this 96/100:

Dried roses, savory herbs, leather, anise and tobacco are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2006 Barolo Riserva Granbussia. Firm, austere yet gorgeous, the 2006 is going to require quite a bit of time to fully come together. There is an inner sweetness in the fruit and aromatics that recalls the Romirasco, while the perception of structure and acidity are those of Cicala. Dried flowers, spices and mint add the final notes of complexity. Patience will be key. The 2006 spent 60 days on the skins, followed by 44 months in cask. (Drink between 2018-2040)
