Antoine Sunier Beaujolais, cru Morgon 2016

It is safe to say that Beaujolais has thrown off the un-cool 'nouveau' image and become one of the hottest regions around. With the focus and talents of many young winemakers and growers, the level of quality and the fantastic value for money continue to rise.

Morgon is one of the top few 'cru' of Beaujolais, with a limestone and granite soil rather than the richer ones further south. It produces richer and more long-lived wines than other cru and has even been used as a verb to describe a wine becoming more Burgundian with age - il morgonne.

Antoine Sunier has only been in Beaujolais since 2014, making this only his second vintage. This is incredible when you consider the level of quality he has reached already.

Vinous gives this wine 92/100:

Brilliant magenta. Vibrant, sharply focused dark berry and peppery spice aromas, along with a hint of musky flowers. Subtly sweet and incisive, offering juicy black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a hint of licorice that builds on the back half. Silky, well-knit tannins give shape to the penetrating finish, which hangs on with excellent tenacity and building sweetness.
