Barolo Riserva 2008, Alessandro & Gian Natale Fantino, Cascina Dardi-Bussia

Alessandro and Gian Natale have been working together since 1998 to build their family winery. All of their grapes come from their own 8 hectare vineyard in the Dardi cru of the Bussia vineyard area. This is a wonderful vineyard with south and southeastern aspects, giving the grapes plenty of sunshine and time to ripen.

Their Baroli are not hard and unapproachable, rather they have power with elegance, mid-weight structure and delicious drinkability.

This is a pale looking wine, with violet floral notes, truffle accents, savoury cherry and cranberry fruit and a firm tannic structure that will let it age for many, many years.

Antonio Galloni gives it 95/100: The 2008 Barolo Riserva has barely budged since I tasted it a year ago. While so many other 2008 Barolos are built on perfume and grace, Fantino's 2008 Riserva has those qualities, along with a surprising amount of pure, unbridled power. This uber-classic, deceptively mid-weight Barolo packs a serious punch. A host of sweet cherry, sage, lavender, tobacco and smoke meld into the building, intense finish.
