Domaine Huet, Vouvray Moelleux Cuvee Constance 2009 50cl

£115.00

One of the greatest sweet wines of the world, this is one of few releases since 1989. Domaine Huet is already the most famous name in Vouvray, and Chenin Blanc, but this cuvee - named after the owner's mother - is something rare and wonderful.

This wine is made using botrytised grapes, giving it complex flavours of tropical fruit, citrus fruit, blossom, marmalade, bitter orange - and this is all wonderfully balanced by high acidity.

The Wine Doctor gives this 19.5+/20:

Residual sugar 151.4 g/l, alcohol 11%. Great purity here; although you might expect great sweetness what it shows on the nose is a very pure, lightly polished, lightly honeyed yellow fruit character. What differentiates it on the palate is the prodigious residual with the amazing midpalate texture that broadens out to envelop the whole midpalate. It has a very admirable presence, showing all the pure substance but with more texture and a more crystalline feel to the acid backbone. It is remarkable that such richness and its tinges of botrytis can be packaged within such an elegant and freshly composed palate. It has great acidity, which keeps it all very fresh. Yet another great showing for this cuvée.

John Gilman gives this 98+/100 points:

The 2009 Cuvée Constance, at eleven percent alcohol, is probably a very ripe vintage for this rare bottling as well, as it must be carrying ridiculous amounts of residual sugar to go along with its magically snappy acidity. The nose is a tropical paradise of pineapple, oranges, lemon oil, honeycomb, intense notes of acacia blossoms and a magical base of chalky minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and utterly refined, with the cleanest, purest botrytis one can imagine, beautiful focus and balance, very racy acids and a laser-like finish that just goes on and on and on. Pure elixir, with a lightness of step that is haunting for a wine that is absolutely loaded. A great, great vintage of Cuvée Constance. (Drink between 2020-2100)
