Cote Rotie, Jean-Michel Stephan 2014 - Natural Wine

This really is an interesting and exceptional wine.

Jean-Michel Stephan likes to keep things simple. This is a Natural wine with no intervention by chemical or by other means. There is no new oak - so nothing to mask any natural flavours.

Stephan is also unusual in using Serine - a grape variety similar to Syrah. There is also no added sulphur, which means the natural flavours can come to the front.

This is a wine of finesse and delicacy, although it has a concentrated and full-bodied texture. The alcohol level is a refreshing 12%, meaning you can enjoy this with less chance of a headache in the morning.

Flavours of cherry, blackberry, liquorice and cinnamon come through beautifully. The nose is strong with pepper, incense and floral notes.

If someone toils on 40 degree slopes, in an arduously warm climate you hope they come up with something delicious. And, well done Jean-Michel, you have!

Vinous gives this 91/100:

Bright violet. Intense, spice-accented dark berry skin and cherry pit scents are complemented by notes of olive, dried flowers and cured meat. Offers smoky, nicely concentrated blackberry and bitter cherry flavors; cracked pepper and mineral qualities add vibrancy and lift. The meaty note repeats on a juicy, focused finish framed by silky, harmonious tannins. On the wild side, but not too far over there for most fans of wines from the region.
