Paolo Bea, Montefalco Sagrantino Pagliaro DOCG 2009

Montefalco is a small town in Umbria, Italy. Their grape, Sagrantino, has been nurtured here for many centuries in tiny amounts.

Paolo Bea's family have been there since at least 1500. Over 500 years of wisdom has given them patience and an ability to nurture their vines and create artisanal wines. Limited chemical input is key to their philosophy. Their wine should taste the way it does because of the land it comes from, the grapes that are grown there and it should be a testament to its place.

The Pagliaro is Paolo's most important wine. The grapes are macerated for a very long time - 48 days - providing it with colour, oomph and depth. There is then a resting period of one year in steel, followed by two years in oak and one year in bottle before release.

The Bea family certainly takes its time.

With 15% alcohol, this is a wine to sit and contemplate the world with. It is big and full of ripe dark fruits, spices - cinnamon and clove - and with wonderful mouth filling ripe tannins.
