Ruggabellus Efferus 2013

Ruggabellus typifies the move towards small production, artisan and unique wines. Abel, the owner and winemaker, grew up as the son of a father who was winemaker at Penfolds - the famous and distinguished Australian wine house - and therefore has the Barossa Valley in his blood.

His aim is to produce wines that speak of their place in the world which can also be collected and cellared.

The wines use no oak and are tended to using Biodynamics - a type of Organic farming.

Efferus (untamed) is the Mataro (Mourvedre) dominant one of the bunch. Mataro is generally used as a blending grape but in this is given top billing. Complex and full of nuance, yet brimming with delicious fruit and spices this is delicious. Only 2120 bottles of this were made!

Vinous gives this 93/100:

Bright purple. Heady aromas of fresh blackberry, blueberry and liquorice are complicated
by pungent notes of vanilla, incense and allspice. Lush, intensely
flavored and seamless, offering deep dark berry and cherry compote flavors
and a suave floral nuance. Finishes supple and very long, with
resonating spiciness, a hint of candied flowers and sweet, even tannins.
